Bio:
Emily Stone is a Potter residing in Calgary, Alberta Canada. In 2010 she decided to enroll in the fine art program at Red Deer College where she intended to pursue a painting degree but ended up falling in love with clay instead. From there on after she attended the Alberta College of Art and Design and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree majoring in ceramics. Currently she is working from home in Calgary Alberta in her modest start up studio where she creates ornate utilitarian pottery. Her focus is to make work that engages through the senses; how objects feel as well as how they can visually intrigue the user while being used.
ARTIST STATEMENT:
Ceramics inspires me because I can make beautiful objects from something that is messy, complicated and complex, but with time creates something that is so simple and sinuous that it is wonderful to behold. Working with clay is humbling; the more I learn about clay and how to yield it, I learn more about myself and that relationship is reflected in the finished work. Through me I can use the material to create an object that is effortless in feel and fit but underneath the surface hides the many complexities and difficulties of clay.
My designs are inspired by the flora and fauna that surrounds us; the imagery I use is reminiscent of natural occurring patterns and the ornamentation of nature and is represented through my interpretation of it. I use a combination of glaze and underglaze to achieve a surface that looks like a watercolour painting in conjunction with my imagery. Through consideration of the surface and form I endeavor to create well-crafted pottery with the intent to find itself in a domestic setting.
